இந்த பாடலுக்கான புராணம் நிகழ்ந்த இடம் திருக்கடவூர் தலமாகும்.
மிருகண்டு முனிவரும் அவருடைய மனைவியான மருத்துவவதி தேவியாரும் தங்களுக்கு குழந்தை பாக்கியம் தரும்படி இறைவனை வேண்ட குறைந்த ஆயுட்கொண்ட அறிவாளியான குழந்தை வேண்டுமா அல்லது அதிக ஆயுட்கொண்ட முட்டாளான குழந்தை வேண்டுமா என்று இறைவன் கேட்க அறிவாளியான குழந்தையே வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டு மார்க்கண்டேயன் எனும் குழந்தையைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டனர். மார்க்கண்டேயர் பிறந்ததிலிருந்து ஆயுள் அதிகரிக்க இறைவனே சரணடைய வேண்டும் என்று போதித்து வந்தனர். அதனால் மிகச்சிறந்த இறை பக்தனான மார்க்கண்டேயர் எப்போதும் இறை பூஜையிலேயே வாழ்க்கையைக் கழித்து வந்தார். அவரது ஆயுட்காலம் முடியும்போது அவரை மேலுலகம் அழைத்துச்செல்ல எமதருமரும் எந்தப் பூஜையில் இருந்தாலும் அவரது ஆயுள் முடிந்தால் அழைத்துச் செல்லவேண்டியது தமது கடமை என்று எண்ணி அவரை அழைத்துச் செல்ல பாசக் கயிற்றை வீசுகிறார். சிவபூஜையில் இருந்த மார்க்கண்டேயர் சிவலிங்கத்தைக் கட்டி அணைத்திருக்கும்போது பாசக்கயிறு அவரோடு சிவலிங்கத்தின் மீதும் விழ அதிலிருந்து இறைவன் வெளிவந்து எமது பூஜையில் இருக்கும் அடியவர் எவரையும் கொண்டு செல்லும் உரிமை உமக்கு இல்லை என்று கூறி எமதருமரை காலால் எட்டி உதைத்துத் தள்ளிவிட்டு, மார்க்கண்டேயருக்கும் என்றும் 16 வயதுடன் சிரஞ்சீவியாக இருக்கும் வரமளித்தார்.

।। Thirumoolar Thirumandhiram - Irandaam Thandhiram - 2. About eight places which were graced by Lord Shiva owing to His benevolent nature as described in Vedhas- Song 7 ( Song 345 in Thirumandhiram ) - Meaning ।।
" The place where this historical event happened was Thirukadavoor. "
" The sage Mirukanndu and his wife Maruththuvavadhi Devi yearned for a child and prayed God. There was a question posed by God to them asking if they wanted a child with less lifetime but extremely brilliant or a child with long lifetime but foolish. They asked for a brilliant child and by that boon were bestowed with a son who was known as Markandeya. They both trained the child from young age to surrender to Lord Shiva in order to get the grace of attaining a long lifetime. Owing to this Markandeya was ever involved in doing rituals to the Lord. When his end time reached Lord Yama put his noose around Markandeya though he was praying Lord Shiva at that time. He had been hugging the Lord in Linga form when this happened. Since the noose tied even Lord in Linga form the Lord emerged with anger for disturbing his devotee and kicked Yama with His leg and said that he does not have the right to sieze the life of his devotee who was praying Him ever. Thus the Lord granted the boon of staying ever at the age of 16 to Markandeya and thus he became a Chiranjeevi - one with no death. "

" தியானத்தில் இருந்து மூச்சுக்காற்றை உள்ளிழுத்து அடக்கி அதன் மூலம் மூலாதாரத்தில் எரிந்து கொண்டு இருக்கும் குண்டலினி சக்தியை "
" சுழுமுனை நாடி வழியே மேலேற்றி அங்கே சகஸ்ரரதளத்தில் சேர்த்து "
" அதைத்தாண்டிய பரவெளியில் இருக்கும் இறைவனை உணரும் உயிர்களுக்கு "
" காலனை உதைத்து சாகா வரம் அளிப்பான் இறைவன். "

" Staying at deep meditative state when one directs their life breath within from the base energy chakra Mooladharam (located at end of spine) thereby raising the Kundlaini fire burning there "
" above via the Mid Naadi - energy channel Suzhumunai along the central vertebral column towards the seventh chakra Sahasraaram located on top of the head "
" and get it united with the divine light on the ethereal space thus in yogic union state of realizing the Brahman - for such living souls "
" Lord Shiva kicks away the fear of death and blesses them with immortality."
